Question of the Week. . . | |
GI upset is fairly common but an annoyance at worst. The other side effects are much less common and usually require prolonged use. The one thing that can be relevant to the athlete using them prior and during an event like ironman is the dehydration issue. That is why each athlete should test the use of NSAI's prior to race day! - the basic concept of everything new that you consider doing during a race.
I have not had hydration problems with their use and I believe the anti-inflammatory benefits - no muscle aches, pains, cramps, spasm etc during the race - far outwiegh the rare potential for side effects.
I use Ibuprofen 800mg. the night before the race, the morning of the race and at the beginning of the run. 2400mg total.
Remember: Try it before race day. Educate yourself regarding concepts of hydration and salt replacement.
One of the major reasons for ironman athletes not reaching the finish line is hyponatremia. . . Us old guys have to pay attention to this stuff!!!"
(Note: Chuck's also graciously volunteered to provide his guidelines on fluid/electrolyte replacement. Stay tuned to this space).
