*should add 3 minutes to BO's time as he admitted to jumping the gun and starting w/the younger 'uns.
1st 2 miles are an out and back flat loop in Rocky Neck State Park followed by a hill section in miles 4-7.
The next 14 miles wound around the coastline. Unfortunatley , on this day there was no relief from a wicked coastal
headwind. Crowd support consisted of a 100 or so people at miles 14-16 in the town of East Lyme. Miles 22-26
consisted of some rolling hills with 1 nasty downhill at mile 24. The support was great. No GU on the course.
No draft packs in the sub 3:30 to shield against the wind or to pace off. Very low key, logistically easy to get to
w/9am start, easy parking close to start. Mainly first timers. Tougher than Phillie but like Hartford, recommended
if doing CDA or Brazil.
Temp in mid-50s, windy, some drizzle (mostly after 2:15 in); 1000 marathoners mixed in with about 600 10-milers (and marathon relay teams).
Well run, lots of people at intersections, water and Powerade at stations, decent crowd support on course.
Personal result - DNFed at 15 miles - ran out of gas, various aches, other excuses. Definitely went out too fast for my
lack of marathon training. 30:48 at 5, 1:02:40 at 10, 1:38:02 at 15 then stopped (actually had to run another 5 to get
to the finish).

Nice 600+ participant race through Ridgefield, CT. Good last race before the NY Marathon
Don H and I were the sole representatives for WTC at Ridgefield. I barely made it to the starting line,
recovering from major post-Chuck party food comatose. The course throws climbs at you the first 2 miles,
the next 9 miles consist of 2 rolling hill loops. The last 2 miles are an extremely fast downhill with a
grass finish. The usual Boston build up contestants were there.
Well this was defenitely the hardest freakin ride I have ever done in my life. A 25 gear is not
what you want on this ride. TFO - Hills like Riversville & Sherwood were on the first section of the race considered
flat. Picture 13 miles at 7% grade and then you have a climb. Anyway I knew we were in trouble when the day before
the race BO & I went for a ride with a guy that had done the race before and he had a 30 gear and after looking at
the results for the past years and seeing George Hincappie did the race and was second. This was going to attract
a lot of great riders. Also the morning of the race in the parking lot there were cycling team vans there. Not a
good sign!
Race takes off and it's very fast. Not packs of people here and there but the whole damn 850 people
flying in one big peloton (swerving, falling down, crashing, flating, etc...). Very scary!!! Anyway I push on
and keep my line and just take it all in. Seeing team guys talk on the microphone on their shirts to other team
mates is very intimidating. But like one guy said the race starts at mile 52. Tens and tens of people just
started to drop off at that point. Made it a little more comfortable. Of course at that point I started to
realize that I should have take another bottle in my shirt. Oh well, push on. The long steady 13 mile climbs
at 7% and then more mile at 4% and more at 1%, 2%, 3%, etc... was just horrible. Believe I thought about
quitting. Anyway I get to the base of the mountain and it said 2.5 miles to go. I was so relieved.
Little did I know what was to come.
First two miles in the mountain were hard definitely steeper and
longer then Riverville, etc... but you're numb at that point so you just stand up and push on. At
exactly .5 mile to go I'm out of my seat putting all my weight on the pedal and pushing down and I
can't rotate the crash so I quickly had to unclip or fall off. I walk up about 100 yards and get
back on the bike. Incline is less there but still sick. So I continue on pushing on. With 125
yards to go from the finish line again the grade was so much that I can barely push the pedal and
that includes doing the paperboy method (zig-zagging). THEN I got a horrible cramp on my left
quad and hamstring. Had to jump off the bike real quick. No fun before you don't know how to
stretch when the front & back of your leg are cramping at the same time. Anyway I try to walk
up to the finish line by stretching, screaming, slipping with the bike shoes on the steep slope
and finaly got back on the bike and crossed the finish line on the bike (last 25 yards were flat
parking lot).
I have never had to walk up a hill before in my life. Would I do this race again?
Sure... Next time 27 gear, extra bottle and maybe have the US Postal team working for me too! :-)
Good tune up race for Philadelphia or Mystic
An all around good race. Since I didn't register early I was placed in the 3rd wave and basically just passed everyone in
front of me. My swim was fairly good, 11 min (probably short), but the run through the low tide for at least 100 yds
and up the beach made for a long T1. I got it going on the bike early and pushed. These sprints are an aquired mindset.
I have to remind myself that the excruciating pain will be over quickly so it's okay to push it. The bike did have a
few false flats where I felt I was working harder then I should have. I got into T2 and got into running stride as
soon as was possible and was able to run down about 5 people. When I crossed the line I felt great, because I was
able to pick it up the last mile. Unfortunately I didn't bring home an age group award due to the fact that all
the guys in my age group finished in the top 11 and they only gave out 1st male/female overall. Overall alot of fun.
The day broke windy, rainy and cold. I was more than a bit worried about the narrow descents and whether I would
safely finish the race or spend the rest of my European vacation in a Zurich hospital or limping around like a mummy.
My achilles also had been bothering me and the wet weather probably didn't help it much. But there I was on the start
line, wearing my USA singlet, in the biggest race of my career with the best guys in the world.
The first 10k run was 4 loops. Across the grass then up for about a mile, the last part being a mud and gravel
section before a steep descent on wood chips. Then out on the road for a 1/4 mile and then around the very muddy
transition area before beginning another loop. It was much more like cross country than a road race. On the beginning
of the 4th loop the rain let up and it warmmed quite a bit. I didn't feel as apprehensive getting on the bike.
The bike was 5 loops with a very narrow and curvy descent. I took it slow. By the 3rd loop things dried out a bit
and I started to have fun with the whole thing. A lot of spectators cheering for the USA and Brennas relentless cheer
of, "Go Spartacus go,you are a warrior! Go!" Which the locals felt quite amused by and started to repeat with a
German Swiss accent.
The last 5k was tough especially the first loop. Had to briefly stop to stretch the achilles
but felt much better on the 2nd loop. I gave it my all through the mud over the last quarter mile and finished
pumping my fist to the cheers of the crowd. I placed 30th out of 59, so I was right in the thick of it.
PS Being part of Team USA was a great experience, the town treated it like the Olympics. There was a parade and
the kids really got into it. They wanted autographs on their T shirts or in notebooks from all the competitors.
When the first kid approached me I didn't know what he wanted. When I realized it was my autograph I thought,
"You must have me confused with somebody else". So I started smiling and laughing and signed dozens of T shirts
and notebooks. The locals were great!

The race was changed to a duathlon 5k run, 40k bike, 10k run. . . it was a consistent effort
but I did not have the top end speed that day, simple as that. (read more about JHo's day...)
The Danbury Sprint is a tough and interesting course. Very short swim 500-600 yds. Very hilly bike, sort of an
up and over and back again. The run is the toughest 5k I've seen anywhere. There is a 3/4 mile climb starting
on the second mile,it really slows you down. The fastest split was 19:20,by the winner. I can usually break
19 minutes,my time was 21:23. If you are looking for a sprint where you really gotta put it out there
this is the one. I think this series will get very popular over the next few years.

It was NOT April fifth
It's a great local town race on the 4th of July (bit hot and humid this year, though not too bad) that has grown
to 300+ participants. Really scenic - actually goes past Don Henry's house at about mile one. Donna, Don and I
did the race this year. Donna did great finishing 12th overall, but more importantly, winning the overall
women's title with with blistering 18:31. Donna's pretty happy about her continued improvement and thrilled
that she ran a sub 6:00 minute/mile pace. Don's also continuing to improve steadily, finishing 15th overall in a time
of 19:20. I can't complain about finishing 6th overall in 17:02. In fact, I'm pretty happy about the result.
Having said that, I'm still a novice and continue to make rookie mistakes. Not having raced much in this type
of venue (very different than a 5K off the bike), I had no idea about proper pacing or even what my race pace
should be. Thought, based on my training and track workouts that it ought to be around a 5:45/mile pace.
Unfortunately, I went through the first mile in 4:52, so I eased up quite a bit and went to the pace I
thought I should be running, i.e. around 5:45/mile for the balance of the run. In any case, it was a
valuable learning experience and gave me a better understanding of what my 5K race pace ought to be.

This is actually a race I've never done so I was looking at it with fresh virgin eyes.
Now I understand why everyone raves about the race! . . . (read more of CD's report)
Well it would have been worth going down to Atlanta this past weekend just for the weather (sunny and 70's), but it was sweeter than a Georgis peach bringing home the prize I've been working towards. I got a spot on Team USA - the chance to compete in the World Duathlon championships in Switzerland. I had an excellent first and second runs (second fastest time for both), but did not feel the power on the bike. So, MK, Linc, JBo, JHo, Monty and Chuck, give me some advice on speeding up the bike. I was seventh place in my age group, which was more than good enough to qualify because some of the guys ahead of me had already qualified. I'm feeling pretty high and for a while anyway would like to be referred to as Spartacus!!
This race is scenic, very friendly and fairly competitive. The water was cold, big surprise,so I didn't warm up for the swim which was on the slow side even for me. My bike leg was good and my run was even better getting just under 6 minute pace for 5 miles. I won my age group and placed in the top 20. This race is a great weekend getaway,if you ever get the chance go do it
Congrats to Lincoln and Donna (my wife) who were both 3rd overall and Don Henry who raced
strong and is continuing to show improvement by leaps and bounds. Pretty good considering 565 racers for
this 'small' local sprint. All of us raced in the elite wave and racked our bikes together. The day turned out well (no rain and moderate temperatures). The water was a cool, refreshing 69 degrees. About 50 people started in the elite wave, and the beach was so wide that there was plenty of room to swim. It actually got more crowded as the headed out to the buoy. Felt really comfortable and kept a straight line (amazing what a difference a good pair of googles make), but not too happy about the effort I put out, that is I could have gone a lot harder.
The bike is rolling hill course, very similar to the Thursday night SUNY ride. Traffic control by police was great, but there was a lot of traffic backed up at times. I rode in with group of 4 other riders (1 of them drafting so badly that I started yelling at the Pinhead, the other 3 guys made an effort not to draft). In any case, I would pull away on each hill and they would catch up on each downhill. So I made the decision to ride at the back and save it for the run. I was headed in on the bike, saw Lincoln headed out on the run with the lead group, holding 3rd comfortably - though he tells me he was suffering on the early part of the run. Knew that Linc would have a good day and earn another piece of hardware, because the guys in 4th and 5th were significantly behind and would not catch Linc. Felt really tight the first 2.5 miles of the run. When I finally loosened up, really picked up the pace and finished strong and comfortably. Was really surprised to find out I was the 7th overall finisher. Reinforced also that being in the 35-39 age group is a drag. Officially and happily, I was third in my age group, but if you include Lincoln and the 2nd place overall finisher, 5 out of the top 7 were in the 35-39 age group. Also, as I told Lincoln before the race, he has to take one a top 3 overall spot for me to have any chance of placing in my age group. At the end of the day, it's a fun race, well organized and definitely recommended for next year.
The conditions were perfect. Dry, cool, water not too cold. The bike was 20 miles, otherwise olympic distance. Had a pb on the swim and run!

A pair of trios from Blackwater
My first race this year. I was going to do a tri with a pool swim but it was 50 and raining in Ottawa on Sat. morning.
After driving all night I was too cold to even think about getting wet. I did the du it was 2k-22k-5k. I suffered miserably.
Very windy course average 22 mph on the bike. Runs sucked big dogs with transition included to 5k (slow t2 also couldn't
find bike in my lane) went 21:30. Finished 23rd overall, 8th in age group. Had no warm up, arrived at race site 20
minutes before race.. It is a start though. It will only get better.
First real good race of the season for me and although I took 2nd in my age group I was less than a minute behind
the #1 ranked in my age. Had 2 good runs but was a little off the pace on the last 2 miles of the bike. And though
my transitions weren't bad they will never be as fast as JHo's.
First off Congrats to CD on another great performance.
She ran a 3:14 finishing 5th overall woman. And let me tell you that she looked smooth as silk as we observed her.
This is after recovering from food poisoning on friday.
As to my race, a big thank you out to Robbo for pacing me to a 1:35 PR. We were right on our splits the whole way.
As to the race report, the day went pretty much without a glitch. The weather was a comfortable 50 at race start and was
a bit overcast. There was a stiff wind from miles 6-10 on the parkway but not hawaii overwhelming.
I felt very comfortable for most of the race just below my lactate threshold and on cruise control.
The only glitch was leaving the park and getting rearended by a girl talking on a cell phone.
The fact that her car was crushed with a little scratch to my bumper should have been a commercial for SUV's.
from JBo ...
Well I am sitting in a finally sunny California reflecting on a very interesting
race. I have to be brief as we are about to go walking along Haight and Ashbury,
which is like Greenwich Village. The abridged version is that race day dawned
rainy, windy and in the 50's. So instead of the usual sunny and 90's California
weather we had New York in April. All I can say is that when I heard the rain
pouring down the night before the race, I was very happy to be in our single
wide trailer (cabin) rather than the poor campers across the lake, some sleeping
in standing water.
The weekend was fun overall, with the high point
being Barney (the King of Cool) reading Aidan his stories as interpreted
through J Ho, "Duuude, way cool alphabet." The naked aid station was
one girl and 5 guys in their skivvies. I tried to give her a cliff bar,
but couldn't slip it in her waistband. Word has it Barney had better luck.
My race was a good swim, good bike (headwind city) and a good first loop on
the run. Thing went a little downhill (pun intended) with some knee problems that hopefully
will be worked out before Eagleman. "
"...I was doing close to 50 for awhile, and it felt damn good after that climb..." (read more of BO's race report)
"...Talk about nothing to do, we were white trash in training...." (read more of JHo's race report)
Here is a little unoffical blurb on the Duathlon Sunday. The women brought home da hardware.
Margaret was 4th overall and second in the 40-49 and Donna Lesch was 5th overall for 2nd
in the 30-39 about 30 seconds back. 1ST overall woman was in the 50-59 age group at
around 56 minutes and change! Donna led out of T1 and Margaret passed her on the bike
and held on. As for the men, we were represented by Tom Bookless, Kevin, Monty, Josh and
Don Henry. I am sorry if I missed anyone.
The race was split into 2 waves 1st-Men 39 and
Under and 2nd was Women and older guys. Kevin had the lead out of T1, Monty bridged up to
KC at about mile 2 of 10 and then they duked it out back and forth for the next 8 miles,
eventually catching Tom right before T2. Monty led out of T2 to be followed verrry
closely by Tom and KC, Tom motored off right off the bat and dropped KC and Monty.
KC ran right behind Monty, literally, for about 2 miles and then comfortably motored by
Monty as he succumbed to the pressure and lack of ability. KC was 9th in the 40-49
and probably 23rd overall and Monty was 11th and 25th overall or so at about 40
seconds back @57:52. There were about 400 people and the weather was
mighty fine, temperate and little wind.
First out of T-1. Kevin and Monty caught me on the bike at mile 9. We all came into T-2 together and passed the water
station on the way out at the same time. I pulled ahead of KC and never looked back.
1st run=went out fast was behind jbo for 1/2 mile then faded bad, was getting passed by everyone,
james passed me at mile 1.2 and got a good 30-40 second gap on me..
i was not enjoying the race already... jbo was going at a good clip on the run but did not have
blazing speed at all on the first run, since he was still only about 10 seconds ahead fo me at
the halfway point.
t1=at least this part went well for me, again pretty fast and smooth transition time and with
the setup of the transition area i had a very good spot and was out of there in like 15 seconds.
I might have passed james at this point bc that was the only part i would make up time,
in the transitions.
bike=1st lap my legs were dead was getting passed in droves, had no speed or climbing
legs that day.. 2nd lap went a little better but still very slow didn't get passed by as many people
as the first lap...the rain started on the second lap
t2=now that i'm soaked from the bike, the second transition went relatively smoothly but not
fast as usual due to the shoes being extremely wet and not sliding on as easy.
run=again very slow, at this point i conceded it was a bad race and held a respectable
comfortable cruising pace, not all out but comfortable with a little bit of effort.
In all this race for me was very bad, bad conditions and i had no speed whatsoever in the race.
Jbo, josh, margaret, james all had decent races. Monty got totally screwed and got a within the
first 5 feet of the bike portion of the race.
Highlights of the race = finishing and being done with it, and going to Jbo's inlaws apartment, which
was like 2 blocks from teh start line for chowing down major amounts of food.
