Spotlight on Ed Beusse

Ed Beusse racing at IM Canada 2007

You joined us on our rides and runs in 2001. How did you hear about us?
I heard about you guys from Dr Rich Izzo who I saw about my sprained MCL. I told him I injured it when I started training for an Ironman. He suggested two things: (1) treat the knee and (2) train with the Westchester tri club. The injury didn't get better till after the 2002 season and still I have to be careful.

How many years prior to the Ironman did you do your first triathlon?
It was 1995, about 5 years after I started running I was vacationing in Vermont and looked for a running race of some kind and came across a sprint-distance tri, so I tried it. It was painful but I liked it.

Keeping with this historical theme, what was your background in your pre-triathlon days?
Prior to all this, I was working too hard and was overweight on Wall Street in the 80's. In terms of occupation, I'm now working in Westchester and it helps to be closer to my family and the club rides and runs!

From being out of shape -- to 7 Ironman races?
Yes, at first it was to see if I could do it, but, now knowing what's involved I feel and can improve a lot at the Iron distance.

What are your race plans for this year [2008]?
No Ironman this year, but I’ve got a few shorter races planned. Ironman training is a lot of time away from the family… you’re training before and after work and as much as you can get on the weekends so it’s not something I can do every year.

What do you like most about the Westchester Triathlon Club?
I’ve been training with this club for about eight years now and the best thing about it is the camaraderie we have on the workouts. Not everyone comes to every workout and some members come and go but there’s always friends showing up and that kind of consistency is great for many reasons. There’s no sign up or fees for membership, just show up, participate and that in itself is a contribution, you can learn so much about the sport from the others and maybe eventually someone will learn something from you. It’s was Rich’s idea and it works.
