Spotlight on Tom Bookless
Tom is one of the senior members of the club -- seniority in terms of race experience, and longevity at the sport. While he generally keeps a low profile, Tom agreed to be interviewed for this spotlight feature.

How did you get started?
"It was 'back in the day', 1986 I guess. I had been swimming in college (Ohio University) and riding with friends and a triathlon seemed a natural thing to try. I actually don't remember the race though. Except forone year off for some reason, I've kept doing this since then."
When did you get into Ironman racing?
"My first Ironman was in Sunapee, New Hampshire in 1990. I remember I did the race and then drove from New Hampshire back to Ohio U in time for class the next morning. I raced Ironman Hawaii in '92, '94, and '96. I've usually done long races one year, and shorter races the next."
What's in your race plans this year?
"Ironman Wisconsin in the Fall with others from the club. In June, there's the Triple-T Challengein Ohio with Barney and Mimi. Be interesting to return to the scene of my early riding days. I remember that area being hilly. In between those races, nothing really scheduled."
How's your training coming along?
"My hamstrings and back were injured at the end of last season after Ironman Austria. Couldn't run for awhile. Am getting back into things now with some helpful treatment from Rich [Izzo]. And then do as much as I can."
Any tips for fitting training into a busy schedule?
"What works for me are two workouts a day -- morning and evening. That and trying to work as little as possible."
