Spotlight on Kevin Cunningham

Kevin Cunningham described himself as a full-time dad and part-time finance professional. In addition to that he's also an avid triathlete. This spotlight interview is on Kevin.

So Kevin, what's new?
"After 20 plus years of rugby, triathlons are new for me. The training, the races, and the people are all fun. Last year I was motivated to "just finish" IM Lake Placid. This year I want to finish in 12 hrs. or less."

What races do you have leading up to IM USA?
"I recently did the Brooklyn Half Marathon. Eagleman Half-Ironman, Fairfield Half-Marathon, and then Ironman USA at Lake Placid in July.

And after?
"After that there's the WestPoint Sprint Tri, and the Westchester Olympic distance triathlon." [Kevin is also on the committee for theWestchester Triathlon].

Training wise, what are you doing differently for that schedule?
"Speedwork in the off-season, and (hopefully) losing weight. I'm also looking at acquiring a new bike for summer races. Details to follow later."

Your race season has sprints, Olympic distance, and Ironman triathlons along with some longish open running races. Howdid you first get started?
"On New Year's Eve 1998, I was 'recruited by Ray Kelly and Phil Gormley. I got further sucked into the Triathlon vortex by spin instructor, Mimi Boyle. I knew about the club from Boyle but received a formal introduction when I was getting hamstring treatments from Dr. Rich Izzo."

With your finance job requiring a commute to and from NYC, and a family, how have you carved out training time?
"The majority of my training occurs in the early morning hours when work and family seldom encroach. I'm on the train intoGrand Central before 6am, get my workout done in the city, and then onto the office."
