Spotlight on Rich Izzo

Rich Izzo is 42 year old age grouper [in 2008] that has been around the sport of triathlon for 19 years. The organizer of the Westchester Triathlon Club, and a practicing Chiropractor specializing in sports injuries. This is Rich's spotlight interview.

Looking back over almost 2 decades, how many events would you estimate you've done?
I would say I've completed more than 180 triathlons, including 8 IM's and 12 1/2 IM's. I've also done 11 marathons.

Out of all of those races, what do you view as notable highlights or events?
Highlights of my triathlon career include going to the National Amateur Championships in 1995, a 10:16 IM Florida race in 2006, and winning the 40-44 AG in most of the races in 2006 and 2007. Also being part of Team Payne in the 4m Cross the Long Island Sound Swim, a charity swim for a friend's mom who passed away from cancer.

Looks like you've actually gotten faster with age. Any secrets?
It's amazing how much faster I've become as I've gotten older. I tell everyone that hard work, a passion for the sport, consistency, and not being injured are the real secrets to improving in triathlon.

You're also passionate about the sport off the race course. Tell us about some of those activities.
The passion goes beyond participating in tri's. In 2001 and 2002 I Co-Chaired the Westchester Triathlon. With the Westchester Triathlon Club we saved the race from extinction and grew it to where it is today. And this year [2008], I've created The Westchester Toughman 1/2 Ironman, the first 1/2IM triathlon race in Westchester.

What are some of your motivating reasons that keep you going?
The most important reason to continue to do the sport is to enjoy the triathlon lifestyle. Focussed upon health and fitness, it's become part of my life.
