Spotlight on Martha "Marty" Hill

Marty's first Ironman will be the Hawaii Ironman in October. Marty took a moment to share some of her thoughts in this profile interview.  .

Martha Hill at the New York City Triathlon

How did you get your start in triathlons?
"My Aussie husband is the one responsible for my interest in tri's. Fred encouraged me to run, join the swim team, then bought me a bike so we could spend more time together. We both work long hours at the hospital & have little free time. This will be my 3rd year doing tri's."

Were you doing other tri-related sports prior to triathlons?
"Not quite. I have never really been athletic in my life before. Growing up I enjoyed horseback riding and participated in horseshows (riding both English & Western).

And how did you hear about the Westchester Tri Club?
"I first met Rory, Paul, Tommy, Tara, Christine & Lisa at White Plains Masters, then I met the rest of the crazies & you gotta love 'em!!

There's a special race on your calendar this year, isn't there?
"Yes. I was lucky enough to win a lottery slot for the Hawaii Ironman. NBC showed up at work to give me the great (and shocking) news. The World Championship Ironman in Kona will be my first full IM distance & I look forward to this exciting opportunity. My goal is just to enjoy it & finish."

In terms of tri-equipment, anything special there too?
"I train on a Kestrel, & race on a Felt that was Paula Newby Fraser's

In terms of training, are you doing anything differently this year?
"I have a training program which I am consistently following. (I haven't trained consistently in the past)."

As a full-time medical professional, is it difficult to find time to train?
"That's the hard part. Training is the fun part. I work in the Anesthesia Department at NY Presbyterian Hospital. It surely helps you to budget your time better. And I 'get by with a little help from my.. Fred [husband]'. Family and friends are a tremendous help- Thank you Fred, Rory, Marc & Frankie especially.
