Spotlight on Rob Ryan

Rob Ryan has recently returned to the sport, bringing with him a strong swimming background, and a rapidly improving run. We spent a quick moment with Rob, who works as a technology architect.

How long ago was your first triathlon, and what was the race?
"1983. The Empire State Triathlon."

For your return to the sport, what's on your calendar this year?
"Pawling, Empire State (1,2), Mighty Hamptons, and Westchester."

What's your motivation for training and racing?
"Ed Beusse makes fun of me if I don't. In fact, he's how I heard about the club, and the weekend runs on Sunday mornings."

How is your training different now than before?
"I'm doing lots of running ... running ... running. And I get up very early to train."

Other than that, anything new on the equipment front?
"Nothing new since. . .1985 . . . I need a new water bottle I suppose. And I think my bike weighs more than some of my training partners!"

It's apparent that you've come to the sport as a swimmer. Was cycling or running in there as well?
"It's mostly swimming. I swam at Tappan Zee HS, and later at the University of Texas (Austin) Masters team. But before that, I had a paper route so that involved riding and running away from dogs."
