Spotlight on Lincoln Taylor

Lincoln comes to the sport from a swimming and cross-country running background. He's profiled here for the spotlight.

Lincoln Taylor coming into transition at the Westchester Triathlon 2002

Your first triathlon had an interesting swim, didn't it?
"My first tri was the Big Apple Triathlon 1985 in Staten Island of all places. It was low tide and everyone was walking through the muddy shore during the swim. I thought that was lame and I swam ahead of the walking herd."

What made you do a triathlon?
"In the early 80's I read an article in Sports Illustrated about Dave Scott winning the Hawaii IM. I thought the distance was nuts but the 3 sports would be cool to combine. Years later, at this point it's part of the daily bread."

You've known some of us for years. How far back does it go?
"I have been training on and off with some of the guys for years before it became an official club. Tom [Bookless] and I swam on the same age group team as kids and I met Don [Sandford] in a Master's swim group at the Y in the late 80's."

What are your plans for this season's races?"
"Hopefully Ironman USA in Lake Placid if the body holds up. Others may include Pawling, Montauk, West Point, & Westchester if all goes well."

Any specific training goals as you prepare?
"For me, it's mainly trying to get enough training volume to go the distance while avoiding injury. Not always an easy task for me."

Any new equipment for you this season?
"Not really. The same Kestrel 500 I have had since '97 seems to still be fine although there are always new bikes to lust after."

With your work schedule, what does a typical training week look like for you?
"I'm in software sales. So training wise, I always make sure to do something during the week but most of the volume is done on the weekend."
